3 common types of mezzanine floor

Mezzanine floor

Classified by application type, mezzanine flooring application types include warehousing, storage, office, manufacturing and production spaces. Mezzanines have the ability to increase the usable floor space in a building without being added to the building itself. In addition, they can be made of steel, wood, concrete or other materials.

Mezzanine spaces contribute to the efficiency of space within a building. Mezzanine floors can be large steel mezzanine systems, slender equipment or work platforms, or small storage platforms. However, mezzanines should not be confused with equipment platforms. Differences between mezzanines and equipment platforms can have important implications for construction and building code requirements.

Mezzanines are often designed using different materials, such as steel, wood or concrete. Most industrial mezzanines are made of high-strength steel to facilitate assembly within the building structure.

Industrial mezzanines can be accessed via steel mezzanine stairs. For small mezzanines located in small spaces within a building, alternating tread stairs are a safe and effective way to access the mezzanine.
Rack Mezzanine

A rack mezzanine is a storage mezzanine or warehouse mezzanine designed using a storage rack system as the primary structural support for the mezzanine. This type of support structure can help save money and space because the supports are used for both rack and mezzanine systems.

Shelf and rack manufacturers can integrate multi-level mezzanine structures into racking systems. These help improve the functionality of the storage space and allow for easier access to inventory.

Steel Mezzanine

Structural steel mezzanines have become a common type of mezzanine structure for warehouse storage, equipment platforms and other industrial spaces. Steel structures provide high strength for durable and safe construction.

Steel mezzanines and equipment platforms are available as freestanding structures designed with bolted structures for easy assembly within existing buildings. This makes steel the best choice for adding mezzanine floors to existing spaces.

Concrete Mezzanine

Concrete is commonly used for mezzanine flooring floors. It is the most durable mezzanine flooring system with high point loads and low noise transmission. Concrete floors are best suited for industrial applications that require high structural durability.
