Selecting the best industrial flooring for warehouse mezzanines

How to choose the best mezzanines for your warehouse?

Storage space has always been an important infrastructure support for businesses, and as such, it is typically necessary to utilize every square meter of available space in a warehouse facility. To ensure that both vehicles and personnel have enough space to transport, the usual solution is to increase the height of shelves and racks in order to accommodate more inventory without sacrificing valuable floor space. Unfortunately, this is a solution with obvious physical limitations. However, this problem can be solved by adding a mezzanine level. It can be supported by existing shelving and covered with any type of industrial flooring that best meets its intended use.

In large part, such selection will depend on the distance between the supports of the mezzanine structure and may also affect the choice of cladding material, its thickness, and the choice of both. Additional factors, for instance the requirement to limit noise to new levels, to provide protection from fire from below, or even to allow ventilation, will also influence the structural requirements to ensure that the installation is safe and secure, and appropriate for the proposed task.

The advantages of  mezzanines system

In storage facilities it is quite common practice to install automatic sprinkler systems. If they should be activated, the use of solid industrial flooring held in place by tongue and groove joints may impede the flow of water and prevent it from reaching the floor where the fire occurred. In this case, installing grooved metal flooring may be the solution. Given that a little more than half of its surface is open, grooved constructions also tend to simplify cleaning tasks, as they are much less likely to be retained in the event of any oil, grease or water that might spill out.

Another potential advantage of installing this type of industrial flooring is that these slots also allow daylight from any windows on the upper level to penetrate the lower level. This may help reduce reliance on artificial lighting, and in the process may also reduce a company’s power expenses.

If the intention is to use the upper level to support a heavier structure, such as an office, employee cafeteria, or packing area, and therefore likely to experience heavy foot traffic, cladding of plywood, fiberboard, or wood will prove to be more appropriate. The thickness of the chosen cladding, as well as the number and spacing of the metal joists required to support it, will depend on the total load the industrial flooring is subjected to.
